Subscribe To Craft Coffee

image510356501.jpgI read Brian W Jones’ blog, paid heed to his advice, and now, according to Craft Coffee, I became their first Singapore-based customer.

Craft Coffee is based in New York, and if you pick up a coffee subscription from them, you get a tasting box each month made up of 1 4 ounce bag each from 3 of the numerous artisanal roasters they work with. Past tasting boxes were from Gimme!, Paradise Roasters, Dallis Bros., Four Barrel. Subscriptions are available in monthly, 6 months, or annually. For US, it comes with free shipping, but for international orders, you have to fill up a form and submit to them, after which they will reply you with a price quote. For Singapore, it was $444.44 for a year’s worth of roasted beans. The freshly roasted beans will ship in 6 to 10 day’s time.

I figured this is as good as it gets in the case of getting to try all the artisanal roasters I’ve only read about in my daily blogs.

Thanks for the shout out, this is Brian from Dear Coffee, I Love You—though I do know Mike Phillips, DCILY isn’t his blog. ;-)

Mike does have a blog though, http://www.baristamichaelphillips.com/

    Enjoy the Craft Coffee!

Duly noted and amended, Brian. Thanks.

So for a single roast, depending on whether a double or a triple basket, you get only 6 to 4 tries to get it spot on…. hopes it comes with recommended brew temp.. :)

      Hi KS,

At present time, Craft Coffee doesn’t pack any espresso roasts nor blends in their monthly tasting boxes. So, if I were to base on 18 grams per 270 ml water for both french press and v60 pour over, I could make about 6 cups per bag or 18 cups per month for $37, coming to $2.05 per cup, without counting equipment cost. Is it justifiable paying S$2.05 for a pour over or french press of freshly roasted Intelligentsia, or Ecco, or Aldo? Definitely!

An excerpt from DCILY : “The Craft Coffee box comes with three 4oz bags, giving you enough for 6-8 cups of each coffee. Every bag is marked with information about the roaster, producer, origin, varietal, elevation, process and tasting notes. An extra notecard elaborates a bit more on each coffee giving you more insight into where it came from and why it was chosen.

Colombian coffee crops have been devastated by unrelenting weather and punishing floods. Which makes this coffee, a Caturra varietal, grown by Didier Reinoso on a small farm in the mountains of Las Mercedes, Herrera—where he also grows avocados, plantains, yucas and herbs—all the more exceptional.”

I can feel the love that goes into the tasting box.

Wow, Colin, that’s very cool. I was looking at doing somehing similar a few months ago but it never happened. I am inspired again! You think freshness will be ok? Delivery is direct to your door? Or via vPost or the like? Good for you!! Following in your footsteps ASAP :)

    Cheers, Ben

      Hi Ben,

I was running the above numbers and felt it was a justifiable luxury. Craft Coffee works closely with the roasters, and they ship the tasting boxes out with freshly roasted beans on USPS International Priority Mail which will reach Singapore shores in 6 to 10 days. I can live with that.

Sounds very interesting! Let me know how your first shipment goes. I’d be really interested to hear about the date of roast versus the date the package hits your doorstep here in Singapore. I would also like to check out the packaging and ultimately …. how satisfied you are with the coffee. This sounds like a wine club that my dad and brother are members of in the UK. It gives them a fantastic opportunity to sample some of the best wines from around the world – with a similar explanation of vintage, terroir, characteristcs, etc.
